KYOKO SEKINE - HOTEL JOURNALIST

2012年の末、上越新幹線が雪のために送電線が切れて
動かなくなった日がありました。
その日、悪夢のような経験をしたのです。

行きは東京駅から新潟駅まで直行新幹線で1時間40分、
澄みきった空の下で「カーブドッチ」を目指したのです。

ワイナリィと温泉と、アヴェダのスパサロンがある贅沢なリゾートです。

午後になって突風が吹き始め、かつて経験したことの無い
強風と、おかしな天気に不安を感じていました。
夜は余りの強風に停電、暖房も切れて宿泊施設は真冬の寒さの中に。
電気が戻ったのは深夜2時頃のことでした。

翌朝、深閑とした空気にカーテンを空けると、なんと、
やっぱり雪。しかも30センチ以上も積もり、
一面は白銀の景色と化していました。

夕方4時頃の帰京予定を切り上げ、朝一番で新潟駅まで
送ってもらったのですが、上越線は停電で全線不通。
それでもホームにいた新幹線に乗り込み、走るともわからない
満員列車で立ったまま4時間、170％乗車の列車は
昼過ぎに動き始めたのですが･･･途中で又止まりました。

翌日から海外出張が決まっており、なんとしてでも
東京に戻らないと行けなかった私は、いろんな列車を乗り継ぎ
9時間半かけて東京になんとか辿り着きました。
「行きはよいよい､帰りは…」とはこのことです。

Turned into White Winery over One Night
This is the story that it’s like” Sweet meat will have sour sauce”.

A day at the end of 2012, Joetsu Shinkansen for Niigata(One of the super express train) was out of service by outage due to the snowing.
It was a nightmare day for me.

I was heading for[ Cave d’Occi] under a clear sky taking Joestu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Niigata just 1h 40m in.(http://www.vinespa.jp/)
Cave d’Occi is a luxury winery resort that has some hot springs and the Aveda Spa salon.

In the afternoon, a sudden gust of wind came and I was anxious about the storm I had never experienced and odd weather.
Then in the night so heavy storm knocked out power and the heater was turned off and it left me in the cruel cold. It was around 2AM midnight that power restored

In the next morning I found it was snowing when I opened the curtain feeling the chilly air. It was a snowy world over 30cm fall of snow.

I was taken to the Niigata station in the early morning after changing the plan to take train at 4PM.But the Joetsu Shinkansen was already out of service due to the outage. I managed to ride the Shinkansen stopped at the platform. Standing even for 4 hours in this Shinkansen packed full to wait for the departure, this train pulled out finally in early afternoon, but halted often along the way.

As my overseas trip was scheduled from the next day, I came back to Tokyo after 9 and half hours.

Certain day December 2012

温泉は数え切れないほど行っていますが、
｢砂風呂｣は、生まれて初めての体験でした。
まずその重さと、けっこうな砂の熱さにも驚きました。
そして、もっとゆっくりと入るものかと思ったら、
ここ古湯温泉では20分が普通とか。
外気温のとても低い日だったので
30分ほど入り、汗だくになりました。
後で身体が軽くなり、とても気持ちが良かったです。

A Sand Bath at Furuyu Hot Spring in ONCRI

Taking a sand bath was my first-ever experience though I have soaked in hot springs so many times.
I was surprised by the weight and decent heat of the sand.

And it’s said 20 minutes are normal when people take a sand bath here in Furuyu in Saga Prefecture, but I thought we took much longer.

The weather of that day was freezing outside, I took the sand bath about 30 minutes and I was covered in sweat.

After sand bath, I felt lighter and so good.

Certain day December 2012

今回お見せするのは、ヨーロッパのバルト三国のひとつ、
ラトビアで出会った眼の青い猫ちゃん、
イタリアのシエナの郊外のホテル駐車場で、
ノンビリ昼寝をしていた利発そうな猫ちゃん、
そして、何年か目にマレーシア､ボルネオの森に造られた
「オラウータンを自然に帰す訓練センター」で
出会った4歳の男の子、現在はもう森に復帰しているはずです。

Lovely Animals Around the World

What I’d like to show you are cats and an orangutan.
First (Left one) is the cat in Latvia, one of the Baltic states. She(or he?) has blue eyes.

Next (center one) is the cat in the parking lot of the hotel that sits in the rural area of Siena, Italy. She (or he), who looked smart, was taking a relaxing nap.

The last (right one) is 4-year-old boy of orangutan. I came across him in the training center to get orangutans back to the nature. That facility was built in the forest of Borneo, Malaysia. He must have already returned to the forest.

長野県の黒姫駅から車で20分余り、神秘的な野尻湖畔に佇むリゾート、
「野尻湖ホテル エルボスコ」へ行ってきました。

途中の森は､すべてを色づかせてしまうほどの赤や黄色の紅葉の盛り、
鮮やかな自然の色にただただ感動の嵐でした。
気候温暖化の性で、2週間ほど紅葉の頂点が遅れたと言うお陰で、
この11月10日、11日はまさに、襖絵のような艶やかな山々を
眺めることができました。

そこで特別ディナーは、「秋の収穫祭」と題したジビエのディナー。
黒姫に住む冒険家、作家、環境活動家のCWニコル氏の
オリジナル・レシピのジビエ料理をエルボスコのシェフが調理。
お二人のコラボで、贅沢なディナーの時が過ぎていきました。

日本の四季はほんとうに美しい･･･今更ながら自然の大切さを感じ入りました。
11月25日からは、エルボスコも長い、長い、冬の眠りに就き、
翌年、雪が溶けるころまでドアを閉ざします。
もうすぐ、野尻湖付近は冬支度に入ります。

　
"Autumn Harvest Festival" beside Lake Nojiri in the Foliage Season



I have visited Nojiri-ko Hotel EL BOSCO, the resort hotel located by the mystic Lake Nojiri. It takes about 20 minutes for the car to get there from JR Kurohime station, Nagano prefecture.

On the way to the hotel, I was really fascinated with the woods whose leaves had turned red and yellow.
The vivid expression of nature was just breathtaking.

Since it was said that the height of the fall foliage was delayed about 2 weeks than usual, because of the global warming,
 I could enjoy the view of the brilliant mountains that look like fusuma-e, paintings on Japanese sliding-door panels from November 10th to the 11th.

The hotel served the special dinner, titled “Autumn Harvest Festival” including
Gibier..

The Kurohime resident, Mr. C.W Nicol made the recipe for the Gibier Dinner of Autumn. He, who is an adventurer, author and environmentalist, sheared his original recipe with the chef of EL BOSCO. The chef cooked the dinner and the wonderful time passed by with the collaboration between Mr. Nicol and the chef.

The four seasons in Japan is truly impressive. Again the treasure in nature profoundly moved me. On November 25th El BOSCO will close for long winter and they won’t open until the snow melts in the next spring.
 Around Lake Nojiri, it starts getting ready soon for the upcoming winter.

色彩豊かな四季折々の庭園模様が楽しめる。
右：塩竃にある「浦霞」（ウラカスミ）の蔵元も
震災では白壁が落ちてしまったが､綺麗に修復され酒造りも再開。

11月7日～8日、仙台に向かいました。
目的は7日の夜にディナー付で開催される「トークショー」出演のためでしたが、
もうひとつ、昨年の震災前、2月に巡った仙台、松島、石巻、石釜などで
御世話になった人々の元気な姿を見たかったからでもあります。

ウエスティン仙台で開催された小山薫堂氏と私のトークショーは、
120名定員のところに、170名もの方がご出席くださり
楽しい旅とホテルの話で盛り上がりました。

7日と8日にかけて巡った町と、合いたかった人々に会えて、
しかも笑顔を見せてくれて、
私の心はほっと、旨につっかえていたものが五臓六腑に落ちてくれました。

東北の人々は本当に我慢強くて、優しい。
これからも時々顔を出したいと思います。

　
Tohoku: pleased to meet people I really care about

Left: Entsuin, the temple next to the national treasure Zuigan-ji temple.
You can enjoy the colorful garden in all seasons. Matsusshima.

Right: At Shiogama, the local Japanese sake “Urakasumi” maker has restored white walls torn down by the earthquake and restarted brewing sake.

I visited Sendai on November 7-8.
One intension was to appear on the dinner talk show on the evening of the 7th.
The other was to see the people were fine who had helped me a lot during the tour around Sendai, Matsushima, Ishinomaki, Shiogama in the last February before the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The talk show was with Mr. Kundo Koyama at The Westin Sendai.
As much as 170 attendees were coming there for 120 seats capacity, so was a blast the talk show along a chat about enjoyable experiences of travels and hotels.

Also I could even see the smiling faces I wanted to see in the towns on the trip.
I sighed with a relief and something stuck in me was totally melted away.

I have found the people in Tohoku are patient and gentle for real.
I will continue to show up often there.
